buildingSMART International initiated an awards program in 2014 and is continuing its success in 2016. The purpose of the award is to create awareness of the business benefits of using buildingSMART solutions and to promote organisations that have adopted the methodology. The title of the awards program is: buildingSMART International Category Awards. In 2016 a number of categories have been added and the full awards program consists of the following prizes: Design Using Open Technology, Construction Using Open Technology, Operation and Maintenance Using Open Technology, and Students Using Open Technology.
All members of buildingSMART International are encouraged to suggest candidates to the jury, which will evaluate the submitted proposals. The jury should preferably consist of members who represent a variety of different professions – owners, designers, contractors, product manufacturers, and operation and facilities managers – in order to ensure that the project proposals are evaluated fairly. The jury should also include members who have backgrounds in business, technical and user-oriented aspects.
The evaluation process includes two phases. In the first phase, the submitted proposals will be evaluated by a minimum of three jury members. Based on the gained points in the evaluation, three finalists will be selected from each of the five categories. All jury members will be asked to prioritise the finalists in phase two.
Each jury member will be asked to evaluate a number of proposals, according to a predefined set of criteria. Each proposal is limited to submitting a maximum of three text pages. Each jury member will be asked to evaluate 15 proposals at the most. All jury members will be tasked to prioritise three finalists in a maximum of three categories.
buildingSMART International does not subsidise the effort of jury members, but jury members will get a diploma and be mentioned in bSI-produced material related to the event.
buildingSMART International will prepare templates for evaluation and facilitate web-based conference calls. buildingSMART International is offering to organise conference calls for phase one of the evaluation process. It is anticipated to have two sets of conference calls in order to make it convenient to attend the calls. There will be one call covering North America/Europe/Middle East and one covering Asia/Australasia.
